Wangal Country (Strathfield)
To address the demands of a contemporary family of four, the Vaulted House conceptualises a living pavilion that replaces an awkward and intrusive rear addition to a California Bungalow. Central to the scheme is a concrete vaulted ceiling over a double height living zone, to pull in light and ventilation. The semi-detached addition respects the period architecture of the primary house, whilst introduces a contemporary addition to suit the clients lifestyle. Structural elements are strategically 'stacked' to present a nimble and playful architecture. Green concrete and recycled bricks are envisaged, to ensure the longevity of the building structure.
A tall kitchen joinery unit sits freely in the space, dividing the functional spaces without reducing the impression of the dramatic architecture. It is clad in glazed earth-toned handmade tiles referencing the existing brickwork of the house. Taking cues from the structure, the kitchen island serves as a concrete armature for joinery within, contrasted with the mottled marble to counterbalance the uniformity of the concrete. Glass blocks and bricks temper the expansive natural light, then acting as a lantern in the evening, signaling the life of the occupants inside. The timber 'carpet' adds warmth to the cold concrete, subtly delineating the functional zones within.
More to come.
